Win the Hidden Battle
Most men are not lazy. They are exhausted from maintaining something.
There is a version of you that other men see. The one who has it handled. The one who answers “good” when asked how things are going. Keeping that version standing takes real work, and none of that work makes you stronger.
You can be disciplined, and you can look disciplined. They cost about the same effort. Only one of them changes you.
Notice what the verse actually says. Not work heartily so men will respect you. Work heartily as for the Lord, and not for men. Paul is naming your audience, and he is telling you it is the wrong one.
Brother, ask yourself what you would stop doing tomorrow if no one else could see it. Whatever comes to mind, you are doing for the room.
Then ask the harder one. What have you quietly let slide because nobody would notice if you did?
Those two questions will tell you where you actually stand.
God is not impressed by the version of you that other men applaud. He is not fooled by it either. He has been watching the private decisions the whole time, and His is the only opinion of you that was ever going to hold up.
Stop performing. Start becoming.
What am I doing mainly so other men will think well of me?
God, I have spent effort looking like a stronger man instead of becoming one. Show me where I am performing. Give me the courage to stop, and the discipline to do the real work in the places no one will ever applaud. You are the only audience I need. Amen.
Name one thing you do mainly so other men will think well of you. Stop doing it today. Then take the effort you saved and put it into something real that nobody will see.
